One of my most memorable patients was an elderly woman who had had pain in both knees for many years. She had just recently retired and was extremely saddened that this pain was preventing her from enjoying her much-deserved retirement from the work world. What troubled her the most was the mystery behind that pain: it had appeared on its own, her doctor had prescribed imaging which did not indicate any affected structure, and she had tried many meds to no avail.
